Last spring, our family visited Shelby Farm in Memphis, Tennessee, one of our first stops on a roadtrip that also took us to New Orleans and Austin, Texas.
Always on the lookout for unique activities, we had read about an innovative playground at Shelby Farm that we wanted to visit. But, as soon as we parked our car, our four kids ran not toward the playground but to a towering beech tree standing by itself in the middle of a green pasture.
Something about this tree, its solitary simplicity and magnificence, called to us. Growing wide and tall, it was a pleasure just to stand beneath it.
A compelling idea, well expressed, calls people to it in the same way. As a writer, my endeavor is to eliminate clutter and present the heart of an idea so that it can be easily understood and appreciated. Like a tree in the middle of a field, a well-written idea stands distinct from limitless numbers of other ideas competing for attention.
So, I take as my metaphor a beech tree on a warm spring day in Memphis. Allow me to draw people toward your ideas as well.
